when I walk into the bedroom
I know you are already there
propped on pillows
          reading zen

I don't look at you
just go about my late night
this and that
          then turn

bedside vase:
six pink roses, fern, and
baby's breath
          takes mine

it isn't my birthday
it's just a day
and you know how
          I love pink

my words
lost in petals
and your
          watching eyes
