James Russell began playing guitar at the age of eleven, after begging his parents
for a guitar and lessons for five years. His parents finally gave in.
He hasn't stopped playing, studying, and teaching guitar since. He began perfoming
in high school and through the years has performed in bands, duos, trios, and solo. James has
been playing guitar for over forty years.
During the years of his wedding guitar work in the Sonoma County, California, area and now in
the Shasta, Tehama, and Siskiyou Counties area of far Northern California, James' guitar
music has been highly recommended by many venues, personnel, musicians, and other individuals. He has been
performing solo guitar for wedding ceremonies, dinner parties, and other special events since 1986. The styles of music
James plays cover a wide range and include classical, jazz standards, rock, folk, contemporary fingerstyle, new age,
and bossa nova. He plays classical (nylon string), steel string, and electric guitars.
James also teaches guitar at Herreid Music in Redding to students of all ages and all levels. He
inspires and directs his students toward their goals and according to their own interests
and favorite styles of music. He is also available as a session guitarist for performance and recording.
James is also a guitar maker. Russell Guitars
offers acoustic steel string, nylon string and classical, parlour, electric, and archtop guitars,
and also electric vertical basses. He also builds special Schoenberg steel string models for
Schoenberg Guitars in Tiburon, California.
James has lived in Redding, California, since 2000, after living in Windsor and Santa Rosa, Sonoma County,
California, for many years. He lives with his wife,
Layne Russell, who has been a wedding minister since 1984. She also plays guitar, is a songwriter, a writer,
and photographer. Their dog Tashi, a "Sheprador" (Lab and Aussie mix), enjoys all the music played by her family.
